# Translate

Yandex Browser's built-in translator can translate everything you need: text, image captions, sites, and documents.

- [Pages](#process)

- [Words and phrases](#words)

- [Images](#pictures)

- [Documents](#documents)

## Yandex Translate windows

{% list tabs %}

- Pop-up window

  In this mode, you can translate text, image, site, or a video on the current tab.

  ![](../_image/translator-on-tab.png)

  Yandex Browser will prompt you to translate the page if its language is different from your interface language. You can access Yandex Translate or translate specific words, images or videos using the context menu.
<!--
- Tab

  In this mode, Yandex Translate opens in a separate tab.

  ![](../_image/translate-on-ntp.png){.border-yes}

  It works in a chat format: you send a request to translate some text, image, site, or document, and get a translation in response.

  How to access Yandex Translate:

  1. Open a [new tab](https://browser.yandex.by/help/en/personalization/ntp.md).

  2. Under the SmartBox, select **Translator**.

     {% cut "If there's no **Translator** button" %}

     Make sure the option is enabled in the settings:

     1\. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Settings**.

     2\. Go to **Interface** → **New tab page view** and select the **Neural tools** option.

     3\. Go to **Tools** → **Neural tools** and select the **Show the "Chat with Alice AI", "Editor", "Translate" buttons on the new tab page** option.

     {% endcut %}

  **View translation history**

  You can find your translation history on the left side of the screen when you open Yandex Translate in tab view. There you can find past translations by keyword, language, or file type.

  To delete a translation, find it in the history and select **Delete** from the drop-down menu.

  {% endcut %}-->

{% endlist %}

## Pages {#process}

{% list tabs %}

  Yandex Browser automatically detects the language of the loaded page. If it's different from the interface language, Yandex Browser asks if you want to translate it. You can also open the translation window by clicking ![Translate](../_image/translator-button.svg) or ![](../_image/menu-tibar-new.svg) → **Translate page**.

  ![](../_image/translate-bar.png)

  {% note alert "Restriction" %}

  If Yandex Browser language is Chinese, Japanese, or Kazakh, the translation icon doesn't appear.

  {% endnote %}

  - To translate the page text into the Yandex Browser interface language, click **Translate** in the window. To display the page text in the original language again, click **Show original** in the window.

  - If you want to translate the page into a different foreign language, choose it manually by clicking **![](../_image/menu-tibar.svg)** → **Change language** in the window.

      If you translated a page into a language and then changed the translation language, the images will automatically be translated into the new language.

  - To see the original text of the translated page, hover over a sentence. The original text appears in a pop-up window.

      {% cut "If the pop-up with text doesn't appear:" %}

    1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Settings** → **Tools**.

## Translation of documents {#documents}

<!--
## Video translation and voice-over {#videos}

{% note info %}

The technology is still under development, so not all videos are translated at the moment.

{% endnote %}

Yandex Browser can translate videos:

- Into Russian — from English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

- Into Kazakh — from Russian and English.

The app dubs the video with a male or female voice, depending on who's speaking in the original video.

In addition, when translating videos from English, Yandex Browser can convey the speakers' intonations and voices using the [lively voices](https://browser.yandex.by/help/en/working-with-files/video.md#cloning) technology. That way, the translation sounds more natural and human-like.

To enable video translation and voice-over:

1. Hover over the video.

1. Click **Translate and dub**. The video will be voiced in the language you selected (Russian or Kazakh).

![](../_image/translate-video-settings.png)

Video translation may take some time. You'll receive a pop-up notification when everything is ready.

If you want to switch back to the original language, click the translate button again or select ![](../_image/menu-tibar-video.svg) and disable the **Translate video** option.

{% note alert "Restriction" %}

You can translate videos up to 4 hours long in Yandex Browser.

{% endnote %}

{% cut "Change the volume of the original video" %}

If you're watching a translated video, you can adjust the volume of the original audio:

1. Hover over the video.

1. Tap ![](../_image/menu-tibar-video.svg).

1. In the **Original volume** section, adjust the volume using the slider.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "If the video language wasn't detected or was detected incorrectly" %}

1. Hover over the video.

1. Click ![](../_image/menu-tibar-video.svg) at the top.

1. In the **Translate video** section, select the desired language. Yandex Browser will remember your choice and translate into that language.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "No notification when video translation is complete" %}

Check if the notification is enabled:

1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Settings** → **Websites**.

2. Under **Notifications**, click **Yandex services**.

3. In the **Yandex services** section, enable the **Video translation** option.

{% endcut %}

{#no-translator__video-no-translation}

{% cut "If the video won't translate" %}

Try to solve the problem in one of the following ways:

- Check your Yandex Browser settings:

  1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Settings** → **Tools**.

  2. In the **Translate** section, make sure **Show the "Translate video" button** is enabled.

- For the translator to work correctly, you need the latest version of Yandex Browser.

  1. To find out what version you're using, click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Help** → **About Yandex Browser**.

  2. If an update is available, you'll see the **Update** button on the page. Click it and wait for Yandex Browser to update. It usually takes no more than a minute.

- Restart Yandex Browser. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Advanced** → **Close Yandex Browser** or press **Ctrl + Shift + Q**. Then open Yandex Browser again.

- Disable the extension that blocks translation:

  1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Extensions** and turn off all extensions.

  2. Restart Yandex Browser: close it by pressing **Ctrl** + **Shift** + **Q** (on Windows and Linux) or **⌘** + **Q** (on macOS), then open it again.

  3. [Clear your cache](https://browser.yandex.by/help/en/personal-data-protection/cache-memory.md#clearing-cache) so Yandex Browser doesn't load a copy of the page that was saved earlier.

  4. If this solves your problem, go through your extensions and turn them back on until you find the one that causes the problem. Restart Yandex Browser every time.

  5. Disable this extension. You may want to let the developers know about the problem.

{% endcut %}

#### **Live stream** {#stream}

Yandex Browser can translate live videos (livestreams and live broadcasts). On [YouTube](https://yandex.ru/promo/browser/streams/m/01), you can watch livestreams in Russian in real time.

Unlike recorded videos, where the neural network gets the entire audio track at once, livestreaming requires it to work on the fly, like a simultaneous interpreter. Speech recognition and voice-over take time, so the translation appears after a few seconds, not immediately at the very beginning of the livestream.

{% note info %}

Translation of livestreams is temporarily unavailable due to the platform restrictions.

{% endnote %}

-->

#### **Subtitles** {#setting-videos}

Yandex Browser supports subtitles for all videos that it can translate. You can turn on subtitles for the source language, the target language, and in Russian and English videos. Subtitles are available on any site, for any video and live stream. To enable and configure subtitles:

1. Hover over the video.

1. Click the ![](../_image/sub-icon.svg) icon or **Subtitles**. If the icon is missing, click ![](../_image/menu-tibar-video.svg) and enable the **Subtitles** option.

1. Configure the subtitles:

    - **Language**: Select the original or target language. If a video already has its own subtitles, you can choose to use them instead of the ones generated by Yandex.

    - **Highlight words**: The words that are currently being spoken are highlighted. This can be useful for language learners and karaoke enthusiasts. The option is only available for subtitles in the original language.

    - **Style**: You can choose the font size, adjust the transparency of the subtitle background, and enable the **Scale automatically** option. When this option is enabled, the subtitle size adjusts to the size of the video window.

{% note info %}

To look up the translation of a word in the subtitles, simply click it. The video will pause, and the translation of the word and phrase will appear in a pop-up window. To continue watching, click anywhere inside the video window.

{% endnote %}
